Required subjects for homeschooling in Washington state

Last month, I took a  Parent Qualifying Course through WHO (Washington Homeschool Organization). Through WA state homeschool laws, I was already qualified (reference the website for more info). But I wanted a better understanding of how to go about homeschooling in the state of Washington and what the requirements were for curriculum. Turns out, there are eleven subject areas that they recommend we cover through their education. They are:

  1. Occupational Education
  2. Science
  3. Mathematics
  4. History
  5. Social Studies
  6. Health
  7. Language
  8. Reading
  9. Writing
  10. Spelling
  11. Appreciation of Art and Music (combined as one)

Since I’m a very visual planner, I assigned each subject area a different color so I can understand at-a-glance, what we’re covering in a particular week. I have a dry-erase planning grid to help plot out these eleven subject areas. I also included a space for field trips, character-education/role-playing and physical education. I don’t plan on tackling each subject area every day. It would be way too much.

And we’re informally homeschooling our kindergartner and preschooler, we’re talking very high level, hit the subject maybe once a week if we’re lucky. I’m happy to have a bit more direction
